RE: Police Allocation, Ka'u District
Dear Mayor,
I am writing this letter as a backup to our phone conversation on KIPA Radio (Talk To The
Mayor), Wednesday, July 29th, discussing the concerns of business owners, managers and
residents (of which I am one) here in the Ocean View ar'ea, regarding the increase of burglaries
and break-ins.
Our police force is composed of approximately two and one half (2-1/2) officers per shift. We
know that they try very hard to do their job, however, since Ka'u is about the size of the whole
island of Oahu, it would appear that they are set up t6 fail. Example: if there is an accident on
the highway, it takes the whole complement of officers, leaving no one to handle break-ins,
domestic violence calls, drugs, and disturbances of the peace.
We need one police officer in the Ocean View area froin 11:OOpm to 5:OOam. We already have a
sub -station in Ocean View Pohue Plaza.
As residents of a remote area, we also realize thatihis cannot be handled by the Police alone.
Therefore, we are forming a Neighborhood Watch program with the first meeting on July 30th at
6:30pm at the Ocean View Community Center. with our Police representative, Community
Policing Officer, Bill Doar, who has been appointed as a liaison between the Police and the
community of Ka'u by Chief Kawauchi.
I am asking for your immediate attention and -kind consideration to this request for our businesses
and homes and as support for a community where the majority want a life-style where it is safe to
raise children.
