Dear Councilmembers,
As I write my testimony, there is another accident on Kupuna Street. Fortunately for the
residents, here this one involved only a fender bender and can be repaired monetarily. And
unlike the driver passing through our neighborhood a couple of weeks ago, the police did not
need to chase her all the way to Volcano.
The next vehicle accident in Kilohana Subdivision may take a human life. As a resident during
peak traffic hour, I am afraid of a car careening through one of our homes, afraid for my neighbor
walking on the sidewalk, and terrified when anyone crosses Kupuna Street.
Kupuna Street (or highway), is the only arterial street between Kailua Village and Keahou. In
1994, former councilman Keola Childs determined that Kupuna street carried 40% more traffic
than any other residential connector street in Kona. As each year passes, I know the volume of
cars has increased, in what was told to the residents would be a temporary situation.
Kupuna Street along with Royal Poinciana Drive consist of 42 driveways and was not designed
to be a thoroughfare. The owners of the properties on Lako Street were aware that their street
was designed to provide a thoroughfaze function.
Consequently, it is of importance that funding for Lako Street to be extended to meet Alii Drive
be funded. In this way we will both shaze in the thoroughfare traffic.
Thank you for allowing me to give testimony for the funding of Lako Street to be connected to
Alii Drive.
