Historical Asaects
- established in 1883 as a family band by two Portuguese immigrants, brothers Joaquin/Jules Carvalho
- the band was quickly adopted by the local government
- in the late 1800's became known as the "Hilo Band"
- in the early 1900's, became known as the Hawaii County Band, and survived the overthrow of the
Hawaiian Monarchy
- in 1904, the Mooheau Bandstand was built and dedicated in January of 1905, and became the home of
the Hawaii County Band and continues to perform at the bandstand monthly as part of a 95 year old ,
tradition
- the band continues to contribute as it has for the past 116 years
Contributions to the County
- provides live and appropriate music at parades, ceremonies, community events, concerts (annual and
one time events), services the entire county
- enriches and enhances the enjoyment of these events (makes them more fun)
- provides a family activity (ie, monthly concerts)

- exposes musicians to standard and new musical literature, as well as the subtle aspects of each piece

- represents the County of Hawaii at community events throughout the island
- often the only county representative at these events
- acknowledges the responsibility of being a county representative and represents the County of Hawaii
proudly and at the highest musical standards possible
