l am writing to oxpmss lay toucan at the proposed cuts in the county's solid waste management division
budget According to the Depaty Chief Engineer of Poblic Works, the proposed budget will resuh in
aigtti5cant cola in recycling programs, including no diversion grants for paper, cardboard or plastic; little
if s~ household ttatxadoua waste collection; limited gteeawaate diversion, and little if any educaaoa

Recycling within the National Parks is not an option-it is inquired bylaw, The fact that recycling is not a
regular pmt of waste maaaganptt on the islmtd, however, has always impeded our attempt to fulSll ow
mandate. 'The liar of materials that recycling busineasos accept has been in a constant state of flux due to
hanging diversion gmnic, matting it difficult to establish coexistent procedures far separation. storage,

With the Hilo landfill soon to close, now is the time for the county to institute a comprehensive recycling
progrnm. Wo feel strongly that people will host support recycling and that recycling will be most
profitable when everyoao shore in rho rosponsbility for minimizing the amount of trash that roaches our
inland landfills. In the laag form, recycling et the sown is the only option that makes sense both
econeanically and environmentally.
