Homeschoolers in Waimea

County Council Members,
We are homeschooters in Wairnea. We were recently involved in the play "Ocean '
World", which wes an environmental play about saving our oceans. We also did a play
last yeaz called Yanomamo, about saving the rainforest. We did these plays so we could
make a difference in what is happening in our world. ~
So we were very upset to hear that in Bill 4.5, the operating budget, funds for recycling
wouk be drastically cut and n;allocatcd towards the landfill. Apparently there is cleaz
evidence that it is less than ha+f as expensive to recycle the garbage (i.e. $75.00/ton to
landfill vs $24.00/ton to recycle).
We know that disposal of waste has become a worldwide problem. We live on an island
and have limited space for disposing of waste. We have to put effort and energy into
disposing of waste in a more ~;ustainable way.
Recycling is that way. It is crucial that we continue to divert those taterials that can be
recycled into recycling programs. Green waste should also he diverted. The byproduct
of green waste (i.c. wmpost) s a resource to our island.
Please reconsider this drastic proposal which would practically scrap the limited
recycling that we now have. We need to do more towards recycling programs, not less.
There is so much more we can work towards, instead of turning back the clock on what
has already been accomplished.
Please consider what we are saying. We love Hawaii and believe in reusing materials
that can be reused, instead of burying them in the beautiful Aina.
