The Kapi'vlani Child Protection Center is here to ask for the Council's support to
strengthen our ability to assist individuals and families in providing safe end nurturing
homes for the children in our community- An increasing number of the children in our
community are facing a crisis in their own homes, brought on by the inability of their
parents to provide adequate care for them.
Yet these children are the future of our community, and our own wellbeing is dependent
upon the ability of our children to grow into competent and contributing adults. Children,
in order to do this. require homes that are free of habitual violence and sti'bstanec abuse.
They require parents who understand the basics of child development, and who attend to
their needs. Sometimes parents merely need education in order to provid~ a safe home.
Parents who are chemically addicted and/or emotionally unstable need a ditionaf help in
order [o provide a safe home.
Research shvw s that it is early rather than later intervention that pays good dividends on
the dollars invested in protecting children from abuse and neglect. The rriisston of our
Title 1V-B Counseling and Supportive Living Project is to provide services which parents
sometimes need in order to provide their children with a safe home.
Our Counseling and Supportive Living Project provides various kinds of assessment in
order to reach clarity about what kind of help is needed by the paeent. After identifying
what kind of help is needed, xee either provide that help ourselves, or provide the
connection and funding to make sure the parent is able to get the help through other
programs. Examples of help we give are
• Substance abuse counseling
• Drug-free supportive livine
• Parenting education
• Anger management classes and group counseling
• Mental health counseling
The Kapi'olani Child Protection Center asks the Council's help to providelthe services
