County Council Members,
I have recently been informed that ir5-Bi1145, the operating budget, funds for recycling
would be drastically cut and reallocated towards the landfill. Appazently there is cleaz
evidence that it is less than half as expensive to recycle the gazbage (i.e. $75.00/ton to
landfill vs $24.00/ton to recycle). I am outraged!
It is common knowledge that disposal of waste has become a worldwide problem. We
live on an island and have limited space for disposing of waste. We have to put effort
and energy into disposing of waste in a more sustainable way.
Recycling is that way. It is crucial that we continue to divert those materials that can be
recycled into recycling programs. Green waste should also be diverted. The byproduct
of green waste (i.e. compost) is a resource to our island.
Please reconsider this drastic proposal which would practically scrap the limited
recycling that we now have. We need to do more towards recycling programs, not less.
There is so much more we can work towazds, instead of turning back the clock on what
has akeady been accomplished.
Sincerely Concerned,
1~-
