Dear Mr. Arakaki,
I have recently learned of the Mayor's county budget proposal which show
significant cuts in the area of the County Police operations. As a resident of Pacific
Paradise Mountain View Manor, off of Old Volcano Highway on North Oshiro Road, we
are trying our best to maintain a civil and peaceful neighborhood. Through a Neighbor-
hood Watch Program that we started two years ago with the help of Police Officer
Tom Lonokapu our community has seen significant improvement in petty neighborhood
crimes. We wish to continue this trend in the months and years ahead. However, the
Mayor's budget plans suggest a potential downfall in overall Police program which I
fear will adversely effect all positive steps that we have taken so far. At the sugges-
tion of our Community Police Officer we have learned to accept our role in watching
out for ourselves, that the Police cannot be in our neighborhood watching out for the
criminal elements. Working together as a team we feel good about our efforts know-
ing that the Police Department will be there when we seriously need them. It is this
trust and support of the Police that I fear may be jeopardized by the proposed 1999-
2000 fiscal budget cuts.
Please do your best in restoring the Police Department's budget.
