Dear Sir:
I am writing on behalf of Ms. Andrea Alonzo of Renew Hawaii, Inc. I teach
Environmental Science courses at Hawai i Community College. During the past two years, I have
taken six class field trips to Ms. Alonzo's recycling center at Hilo Transfer Station. About 150
Environmental Science students attended these field trips. Ms. Alonzo took time from her busy
schedule to explain her operation to the classes. She also provided valuable information on the
amount of green waste going into the Hilo dump, and the amount that she has been able to divert
and chip for recycling as mulch. Ms. Alonzo also discussed uses of the chipped green waste for
composting. We then used the material from Ms. Alonzo's operation to make compost, which the
class used in growing an organic garden on the Hawaz i Community College/UH Hilo campus.
Ms. Alonzo's expertise has been of great value in getting across to the Hawai' i Community
College students the way in which waste material can be converted from a liability to a benefit. An
even greater benefit is the role model Ms. Alonzo provides with her "can-do" attitude. This is
particularly valuable for Community College students--showing them that, indeed, every member
of the Big Island community can make a difference in recycling and re-using our valuable
resources.
I would like to give my strong support to Ms. Alonzo's application to continue the recycling
operation she began at the Hilo Transfer Station. She is providing a valuable service in her
recycling as well as in her educational workshops for the community at large.
