RESOLUTION NO. 168 1�
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM THE DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO KALANI HONUA TO
PROMOTE FOOD SUSTAINABILITY IN PUNA AND SERVICE THE COMMUNITY
AT LARGE.
WHEREAS, Kalani Honua is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that presents culture,
nature, and wellness within sustainable, educational programs that honor Hawai`i's diverse
heritage; and
WHEREAS, Kalani Honua is the largest retreat center in the State of Hawaii and has
grown to become the largest provider of services in the district of Puna; and
WHEREAS, the local community has requested that Kalani Honua provide additional
services due to the lava flow in lower Puna and the threat of isolation should the lava flow cross
Highway 130; and
WHEREAS, Kalani Honua has requested funding to assist with promoting food
sustainability throughout the district of Puna by providing services that focus on affordability,
natural resource conservation, infrastructure, and community wealth; and
WHEREAS, Kalani Honua strives to promote awareness of the health and sustainability
aspects of local, organic, and seasonal foods to help Hawaii Island residents become healthier;
and
WHEREAS, all proceeds from this initiative will go towards Kalani Honua's core
nonprofit programs, including educational classes and emergency response efforts; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code,
Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event,
activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; and
WHEREAS, Contingency Relief funds from Council District 5 will be appropriated to
the Department of Research and Development to provide a grant to Kalani Honua to promote
food sustainability in Puna and service the community at large; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
following amount is hereby transferred/appropriated as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Research and Development and the Director of Finance, and that the
Director of Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the
terms of this resolution.
