NOTICE TO ALL HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS
Dear Council Member,
~Ve need your helps We have just been informed that you will be reviewing the Hawaii County
Department of Research & Development 1999/2000 year budget. Part of that budget includes grants to
assist non-profit organizations (such as ours) in building programs that will enhance & promote visibility
and understanding of our unique local heritage & culture on the Big Island.
~~aimea and the North Hawaii Communities have a proud and unique "Paniolo" culture. It is a part
of Hawaiian history known well to many of us on this Island . However, it is proving to be a new &
fascinating discovery for many visitors and newcomers of the Islands. We know this kind of cultural
discovery has a powerful draw to potential "visitors" of our Island and comes with positive economic
benefits.
Waimea Main Street's "Old Hawaii on Horseback" Community Festival is one of the proposed recipients
of grant money from the Research and Development budget. This event is a special celebration &
presentation of±he Big Islands "Paniolo" heritage. It has built up from a small private'l~aimea event
(started in 1964) and has grown into a regional gathering (on alternating yeazs) of cowboys; farmers;
local business people, community members and visitors tiom all walks of life. The event is growing in
recognition through out the State and Mainland and can be another unique & powerful dra«~ to visitors of
the Big Island. However, this event requires tremendous effort and financial sponsorship from many
sources
Please help us continue stagfng of "Old Hawaii on Horseback" through your support of this grant
Line item within the Department of Research & Development's proposed 1999-2000 budget.
