REQUEST: DATE: 4/14/15 PHONE: 961-8554 To amend the FY14-15 Operating Budget, Ordinance No. 14-81, to include an appropriation for the Wellhead Protection Program grant as follows: 085.3305.xx (new) State Grants - Wellhead Protection Program $60,000 085.601.5607.xx.115 (new) Wellhead Protection Program $60,000 B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The County of Hawaii Department of Water Supply (DWS) received a grant from the State Department of Health for the purposes of establishing a Wellhead (source) Protection Program. The DWS would like to use these grant funds to conduct Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events arount the island. These events allow residents to properly dispose of HHW instead of irresponsible or illegal dumping of HHW which could possibly harm the water quality of the island's underground water sources. The Department of Environmental Management Solid Waste Division will use the funds to make the arrangements for advertising and conducting the HHW events as part of it's annual events. This project will help to educate residents and visitors on the importance of protecting the water quality of the underground water sources for our current and future potable water needs. We respectfully request that this bill be waived from the Council's Finance Committee as these grant funds must be expended by June 30, 2015. SIGNED: DATE: 4/14/15 Department Head
