concerning Departmental Budget & Program Review

There has been an increase in property crime in the Volcano subdivisions to the point
that residents are concerned for their safety and the protection of their homes and
property. We need to have a police presence in our area, not only to protect us, but to
be a presence that would deter crime. The current response time for an officer to
respond is unacceptable and further endangers citizens who hear burglars at their door.
Also, because of our unique location next to the National Park, we want to protect our
reputation for tourism as well. Many of the burglaries are happening at Vacation
Rentals and Bed and Breakfasts.
If we had a regular police presence with daily patrols, the criminals would not have such
free range to boldly enter homes and remove the contents in broad day light.
I have gathered signatures of 90 people in Volcano who, including me, request that you
include the addition of one full time police in the upcoming budget. This position would
be for a police officer whose duty is to patrol the Volcano area on a daily basis and be
able to respond almost immediately for the need for assistance. If the officer encounters
the need for an additional officer as back up, he could do so by requesting outside the
area for assistance.
There is another Petition that is requesting six police officers to cover all shifts. As this
might not be possible, please consider the addition of at least one full time police officer
perhaps with a rotating shift.
I have attached eight pages of the signed Petition to this Written Testimony.
