• Males expire 1-3 minutes
• Females 2-5 minutes
• Females with eggs 2-10 minutes
• Immatures 1-3 minutes
• The cooler temperatures extend the time of expiration because of lower respiration
rate.
• Dusting need not be heavy, meaning Sodium Bicarbonate (SB, FMC manufacturer)
not blanketing foliage white as 'in a flocked Xmas tree or white powdered sugar
doughnut.
• Safety gear should be worn to lessen the continued exposure to sodium over time.
• Long sleeve cotton shirt
• Goggles
• Respirator with hepa canisters install
• Fonn fitting gloves
• Long pants/shoes I
• Hat
• Ear muffs for sound reduction
• Shower immediately after
• Clean equipment per good hygiene/safety practices
• Ryobi leaf blower model#.RY08544 used.
Front blower attachment installed.
Succulent plants, like the Impatiens may show marginal salt damage to leaf
Thicker waxy leaf like Litchi or hapuu maynot, (refer to CTHAR publication7Salt
and Wind Tolerance of Landscape Plants of Hawaii"' March 200 1 L-13)
Testing for your area should be done to plants of value.
Higher elevation plants may show more damage than lower elevation ones of the
same cultivar/spp.
Field trials were run over the course of 3 months in test fields at 900 ft. elevation to
ff-Mum
• Surveys were done before and after to monitor population reduction.
• The amount of females and immatures were reduced and the adult male population
calls were minimized to only 3-5 single callers:.
• 1-3 Males were left to monitor overall population.
• These sites were monitored for female/inimatures activity.
• No females were seen coming to their calls but prior to dusting as many as 1-3
females were observed in immediate area with as many as 9 in one hiding place.
o Immatures. were not seen after 1 month of dusting.
a Over 20 successful trials were done in the buckets with 100+ mixed population of
frogs total treated.
* The limiting factor is, the weather as it is with all current frog treatments, but with
the SB it will keep eliminating the frog until it is physically washed away.
* Field trials were run over the course of 3 months.
A trial was done in a 30 gallon trash can with SB applied once to the inside and frogs were
randomly placed inside every week to see if time diminished effectiveness. Frogs
continued to expire after 6 mos. Top of can was opened to allow ambient temperature but
not rain.
Independent trials by concerned individuals were done and also had the same results. Somc
had been treating their property with HL/CA (Hydrated Lime/Citric Acid) for I to 5 years
• SB is cost effective and also safer than 1HL and as safe as CA according to the FDA.
• HL as a dust is uncontrollable and has no residual action.
• CA has no residual action.
Using a 10,000 square foot property as an example you would need 2-3 50 lb bags of SD
(applied as a dust).
$32 x 3 = $96
Ryobi leaf blower $132
Portable/no need for a truck to transport.
Not necessary to wait for water to fill thru a 5/8" residential hose.
Citric Acid 10 bags (16% solution in water)
$42 x 10 = $420
400 gallon sprayer $11000
Hydrated Lime 1-2 bags (3% suspension in water)
$11 x 2 = $22
100 gallon sprayer $5 000
Hydrated Lime's SLN (Special Local Need) is due to expire in 2008.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses the designation "minimum risk
pesticide" and only needs the State of Hawaii to apply for an 11SLN" for Emergency
use to be able to use Baking Soda and also purchase it with community grant monies.
(THIS WAS AN INDEPENDENT STUDY)
I have been a resident of Hawaii County for 7 years, I first noticed coqui frogs in Papaikou five
years ago, I have been active 'in trying to control the frogs in a way that is as least invasive as
possible. For the last four years I have been establishing a tea plantation. Tea (camellia sinensis)
does best in acidic soils. So the Hamakua soil is very good for growing tea. I have been very
concerned about using lime to control coquis as it is well known to change the PH in soil from
acid to base. VA -tile I have used lime to attempt to control the coqui away from the area where th,
Most recently I have been experimenting with sodium bicaibonate. I have found that this
subvlance-good in control liqgAhe-cDqui and is much less toxic from a handlingpQ-int-of
view.
I fully support sodium bicarbonate being approved by the EPA for use: in controlling the coqui
frog.

Dear Sirs/Madame,
This is a letter in support of the work that Mark Munekata is doing for the
eradication of coqui frogs. His work with bicarbonate of soda has been a
giant step forward in our battle locally with the infestation. We have been
using hydrated lime and citric acid with a county grant to support this effort
but many members of the community object to the irritation they cause. Many
people out right refuse to allow us to spray their properties because of their
landscaping or because of their dislike of "chemicals". When I approach them
with the bicarbonate of soda and explain its use, they are much more receptive
and even pleased with the idea of it.
Our community has been in the forefront of the battle and we also have one
of the largest infestations on the Hamakua coast and we desperately need
any help we can get. We recommend speeding up the process in putting it on
the label and we strongly recommend adding it to the allowable expenses for
the county grants. In our limited testing of the soda, it has shown to be
more effective than the other treatments and it seems to last longer. If there
are any questions, please feel free to call me.
Sincerely,
Jenny Johnson
