Mr. James A.rakaki
Chairman, Hawaii County Council
via Fax to 961-8912
Mr. Arakaki,
Please circulate this to the County Council in Reference to Bi1150, in connection with the Public'
Hearing coming up on Thursday, December 3Q regarding the new SCD Kahakuf Subdivision.
We are homeowners on Halawai Place in the Komohana subdivision, just two doors away from
Lako Street.
We are requesting the County Council to require the developers of the SCD Kahakai Subdivision
to adhere to the previous plans and requirements that they put in a mauka-makai connector
through their subdivision. If you do not require them to follow this, all the cars, both residents
and visitors, from their 100-plus subdivision homes will use Lako Street and/or Kupuna and
Royal Poinciana Streets to get to Alii Drive or the new plii Highway. The traffic at the stoplight
at lako and Queen K is already congested at peak times. The additional traffic should be able to
be distributed to several different mauka-makki connectors, not just focused into Lako and Royal
Poinciana.
In response to the developer's concern that it is "too steep" to add an additional road--since we
all live on the slopes of Hualalai, all our mauka-makai connectors are steep, Lako and Royal
Poinciana just as much as the new road would be.
We feel it is in the community's best interests to pave as many mauka-makai connectors as
possible, both for safety and to relieve the traffic burden on any' one of two.
We also understand the developer now wants to have utilities overhead and exposed, as opposed
to the initial plau which called for underground utilities. We believe that the utilities should be
underground, to help preserve the beauty and ambiance of our entire area. This will also make
the subdivision more attractive to potential purchasers.
Respectfully submlli/ltted, / ~/./J~~
