Resolution Requesting the Hawai'i State Legislature to Designate July 31 as "LA HO'IHO'I `
EA", which Translates to Restoration Day
Aloha Honorable Members of Hawai'i County Council,
My name is Noe Noe Wong -Wilson. I am Pelekikena, President of the Hawaiian Civic Club
of Hilo established in 1929. On behalf of the members of our club, please accept this
testimony in support of the resolution "Requesting the Hawai'i State Legislature to
Designate July 31 as "Ld Ho'iho'i ea", which Translates to Restoration Day". As indicated in
the body of this resolution, the event which took place on July 31, 1843 during the time of
King Kamehameha III, Kauikeouli, was a special day in the Kingdom of Hawai'i's history.
This day, among other important dates in our history, including La Ku'oko`a, Hawai'i's
Independence Day on November 28 and the celebration of Queen Lili`uokalani's Birthday
on September 2, mark events and celebrations of our history and culture which were
celebrated in the kingdom and should not be forgotten.
This celebration is remembered annually in Honolulu, at the site where the Hawaiian flag
was restored to its rightful place and thus renamed Thomas Square in honor of Admiral
Richard Darton Thomas. We believe this resolution will assist us in bringing the
recognition and celebration of this event to Hawaii Island as well as throughout Ka Pae
'Aina o Hawaii, the Hawaiian Archipelago. Although this resolution calls for the State of
Hawai'i to recognize La Ho`iho'i Ea as a Hawaiian national holiday, I urge this council to
also provide the opportunity for employees of this county to elect to celebrate this historic
day as well, instead of an American holiday which may not have historic or cultural
meaning to island residents. Please also consider providing a small grant to educate
Hawaii Island citizens about these important days in the history of the kingdom of Hawai'i.
That would be a great first step. I urge your passage of this resolution.
