We received a request to prohibit parking on the makai side of Kaiulani Street
between Waianuenue Avenue and Wailuku Drive to improve sight distance and
provide wider lane widths for two-way traffic. When vehicles are parked on
both sides, there is only 14 feet available for two-way traffic, which is not
adequate. Prohibiting parking on one side would provide 21 feet for the
two-way traffic.
The Hawaii Police Department, Hilo Methodist Church and the Easter Seals
Foundation have been contacted and they have no objections to our proposal.
Parking is available along Wailuku Drive, Waianuenue Avenue, within the Church
grounds and along the mauka side of Kaiulani Street.
We request that the attached proposed bill of the Hawaii County Code,
Chapter 24, Article 10, Section 24-280, Schedule 28 under (S. Hilo) be amended.
A drawing illustrating our proposal is attached for your information and use.
