We are Richard A. Bowen and Ceridwen A. Sanders and live and work at 43-1781 Manienie Road, Paauilo
mauka on the Hamakua coast. We are Soil and Water Conservation District Cooperators.
We are establishing a koa and sandalwood timber forest on five acres of former cane land at 2100 feet elevation
Paauilo mauka. The Soil and Water Conservation District has helped us develop a plan for restoring the soil
that was badly disturbed with cattle paths and resultant erosion channels, and for planting a forest of koa and
sandalwood, and with other species that will help rebuild the soil and be a valuable timber crop in the future. In
the future we will be planting various species in the understory to attract pollinators, and coffee to be harvested
and sold as Hamakua raised coffee.
The work of the SWCD enabled us to begin without the time and expense of obtaining a separate grubbing
permit. In addition, their expertise and advice about appropriate treatment of the land, and species of grasses,
trees, and shrubs to plant saved use considerable planning time. As a result, we have been able to commence
work this month.
We are interested in pursuing agroforesty in an environmentally sound way and a way that is consistent with
county and other requirements, and working with SWCD has enabled us to be sure we are doing that.
