Subject: Re: H.12, albizia and road ways
Dear County Council members,
The rash of albizia killings via herbicide has caused a sudden veryunsightly landscape in Puna and Hilo. There has been
no caution in the use these herbicides on the large scale. These albizia forests in many places co -existent with native
species. Near Akaka Falls, you can see a thriving hapuu forest under the canopy of albizia. The Ohia near the tree mold
park are dying for lack of the Albizia canopy. I would like to point out that albizia are trees like any other, that have value
to the environment. They cool the earth, build soil, provide nitrogen, absorb carbon, prevent erosion, and create "novel
ecosystems. Respect of all trees should be encouraged in this day and age. The removal of albizia trees, as well as any
other trees, should be minimal. Tree trimming may be all that is needed in many places, especially since something will
grow back anyway.
Thank you very much,
Nani Pogline
