Aloha. My name is Penny Shaver. I have lived in Leilani Estates on the Big Island for about 27 years. Our
subdivison is an area of about 2200 acres. We have only a small road that separates us from the fenceline of the
geothermal plant in Puna.
Up until about 4 years ago I worked at Pahoa Elementary School, which is maybe 2- 3 miles from the plant.
Numerous other school are in the area as well. Both of my children went to Pahoa school. One day at school I
noticed a "geo kit" in the classroom I worked in. It consisted of a roll of duct/masking tape and large plastic
sheets .... to be used to cover the louver windows. There were also 3-4 towels (smaller than bath towels) that
were to be wet and then to be placed at the bottom edge of the door. This was all to prevent air from outside
getting in. There were maybe 2-3 classrooms that had air conditioners that the children with medical or
breathing problems could use. How the children or staff with these problems were to be rounded up and safely
walked to them I am not sure. Our children are our future! ! !
The Leilani busstops for the children are all on Leilani Street ... when there is a leak the gases go up that street!!
Mercury, lead,arcenic and Radon are among the dangerous gases!!
During Iselle (2014) above the winds that it produced could be heard the roar of what sounded like an airplane
landing on my home!! This was reminisent of the blowout of 1991. From my home I could see a vehicle driving
down the road that had a flashing red light on it. If there was a siren or broadcasting system working I have no
idea! I could not leave my home as I had over a dozen trees that completely blocked my driveway. It was truly a
terrorizing experience! My electric and phone were completely useless!!
Geothermal has repeatedly proven to be a bad neighbor. Irresponsible and not caring for the citizens. Please
place the peoples concerns for our families before money interests.
