Dear Chairman Arakaki and Members ex,
HIEDB has worked with the Melastome Committee on an 8 -week
miconia management program. The p e • 3nyported eradication and
control efforts on approximately 21 acre; volunteer participants,
treating more than 15,000 treQ s in the 13 =F Le raiconia infestation along
Onomea Scenic Drive. We are planni;.. ; • >> the volunteer program
April 3, 1999 through May 30, 1999, and, t , ;ar ticipation by the National
Guard, Pohakuloa Training Area, a.ncj ' o,: tmunity Correctional
Center, as well as publicizing the prot.reE `i DOE and civic advocacy
channels.
We believe this has been an in-mporta.n.t community effort to
control a noxious weed which has si nifi •::c. [:) ?C on our scenic planes and
visitor industry venues. it is "real -7�,7 -." :1::..-18 of our environment.
This effort, and many other similar p' } -r - ' - :rinot proceed if the
Melastome Action Committ }e i fo, :d: 1. f,ta.ry hiatus due to budget
shortfalls at the state level.. The 4 . A .i :: ioA1 will provide an
interim solution, with rnatch .c funds in - kind services. We
applaud County and federal efforts :'ti °zhip, and strongly'support
the measure before you.
