Re: Capital Budget
After a survey undertaken by FEMA concluded that in a major earthquake the
hose tower at the Central Fire Station was susceptible to collapse, FEMA has
provided 50% of the estimated funding for design and construction of a new
tower. The collapse could damage the station sufficiently to render it
inoperable as well as damage the Fire Department's dispatch radio antenna,
which is mounted on the station roof.
Enclosed is a bill for an ordinance appropriating $96,000 received from FEMA.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Department of
Public Works.

Amendment to Ordinance fJo. 98-50 to add the following:
Project: Retrofit to Central Fire Station Hose Tower
Amount: $96,000.00
Federal Account - FEMA
A CIP appropriation of $111,000 was approved under Ordinance No. 97-140
to provide a County match.
g. RACKGROLTND AND TTiSTIFICATION RT4F DITIONAT 4 T A NEEDEDI:
This project was initiated after a survey undertaken by FEMA pointed to a
major structural deficiency in the hose tower at Central Fire Station. The
survey concluded that in a major earthquake the hose tower was susceptible
to collapse and thus could damage the station sufficiently to render it
inoperable and also damage the Fire Department's dispatch radio antenna
which is mounted on the station roof.
To undertake the corrective work the Department of Public Works, thru the
State Civil Defense Office has received a matching grant from FEMA. FEMA
will provide 50% of the estimated funding for design and construction,
hovaever, all funds must be expended by December 31, 1999. Bids for this
project are scheduled for opening in mid f4 arch, 1999.
