For'the.,past 13 years; I have followed the progress of the Waimea District Park, from its first inclusion in'an agreement between the County and Parker Ranch, to the search for an appropriate location, to community design charrettes, to working with our elected representatives in County and State government, and to the present, when we are at last on the cusp of seeing the community's dreams become real. As a member of the Waimea Community Association (and for many years its president) and as a member of Waimea Park Builders, the community group that under the leadership of Mel Macy tirelessly advocated for the park, I witnessed first-hand the depth and the breadth of the support for this park, not just in Waimea but across our district. When I first came to Waimea, 57 years ago, to attend Hawaii Preparatory Academy, then located in former Marine Corps barracks surrounding St. James Church, the park across the street from the school seemed enormous, and it met all of Waimea's needs. But Waimea has grown ten -fold since then, and our park facilities have not. I urge you to support Resolution No. 121-15 and, by passing it, to celebrate that together we've reached a milestone in the progress toward realizing a South Kohala dream. There are a great many people who deserve thanks for getting us this far, too many to name, but without the support of Parker Ranch, the Mayor's office, the Council, the Planning Department, and, importantly, the Department of Parks and Recreation, this would have never happened.
