I urge passage of Resolutions 266-15 and 267-15. The accumulation of political power by the extremely wealthy and corporate interests at the expense of ordinary citizens, assisted by the U.S. Supreme Court's decisions in Citizens United and other notorious cases, is a critical problem of our time, underlying many other issues and threatening to erect permanent barriers to effective participation in the political process by citizens who do not enjoy the advantages of wealth or corporate power. The Supreme Court's rulings recognizing constitutional "rights" of corporations and defining money as speech are blows to the democratic nature of our country. An amendment to the U.S. Constitution is the only sure way to correct this dangerous trend. These resolutions will demonstrate that the County of Hawaii stands with the people to protect their rights, and will encourage our congressional delegation to act. Please vote yes on both.
