Dear Council members,
My home, which I built twenty years ago, is perched on the lip of Halawa Gulch in Kapa'au, North Kohala.
Halawa empties into the sea at Hapu'u bay and I hike there on a daily basis with my dog.
During the season, I regularly monitor the beach at the bay for resting monk seals and in particular I have kept
track of I05/06, an approximately 8 year old male born on the island, for many years.
When I choose to hike through the gulch along the creek, versus down Kapanaia Road, I often continue my
hike west from the bay to the lighthouse point passing through Halelua Gulch. That stretch of coastline is
incredibly unique in several ways.
There is both an old cane hauling path of travel as well as hiking paths near the edge of the pali which makes
the hike easy and enjoyable; fantastic views of the sea and Maui, numerous shady spots to stop for some R&R,
as well as a unique sense of what it means to be lucky enough to live on the windy wet coast of North Kohala.
Although the Heiau at Halelua was probably disturbed during the plantation era, it is nevertheless a unique spot
on the coastline, with plenty of evidence of the old Heiau foundation still visible. The floor of the dry gulch
where the heiau was sited is wide and relatively flat, the beach a beach only of fairly large rounded stones, and
the creek bed rather narrow and typically dry. This heiau location can only be accessed by hiking down into it
from the top of the pali above to the east & west. Hence when one is there it is rare to see anyone else other
than a net fisherman or opihi picker. There is little doubt when one is there of why the Hawaiian would have
chosen this spot for sacred ground.
From Hapu'u to lighthouse is probably the longest green single stretch of coastline left in all of North Kohala
that can be purchased as one TMK. Please authorize negotiations for its purchase.
