Subject: Resolution 327-15
Dear Council,
I have lived on Kapanaia Road in North Kohala for the last twenty years. I fully support Resolution 327-15
authorizing negotiations for the purchase of the Hapu'u to Kapanaia Cultural Corridor.
We are extremely fortunate that this historically and culturally significant land is as yet undeveloped and that
the owners are willing to allow it to remain so via purchase with help from the county 2% fund. As I am sure
you are aware this stretch of coast was the home of King Kamehameha the First and his family during his
younger years. The heiau at Hapu'u is unmatched in location with its perfect view of the approach from Maui
and I am told that the Heiau at Kapanaia is from the first wave of Hawaiians to settle on the big island making it
one of the oldest cultural sites on the island.
In addition Kapanaia Bay is by far the most popular non -tourist recreation area for local families in all of North
Kohala.
Please do not pass up this amazing opportunity.
Aloha, John D. (Jack) Hoyt
