Aloha Council Members,
I am Fred Cachola, a kamaaina of Kohala, born and raised in this historic district. I reside in Hawi. My family
and I have been researching and studying the interesting history of Kohala and Kamehameha the Great for
many years. I strongy support Resolution 328-15 calling for the County to purchase the lands at Niulii for the
following reasons.
1.The lands of Niulii and the two adjacent lands described in Reso. 326-15, Halelua and 327-15,
Hapuu/Kapanaia are all significant to Kamehameha the Great. These are parcels of what could be called his
home lands, his kulaiwi, his aina pono'i; indeed, they are his ancestral lands.
2. Collectively, all of these three parcels could be called the "Crown Lands of Kamehameha the Great" - places
that sustained and nurtured him, both physically and spiritually. Saving all three parcels would be one of the
most significant conservation and recreational achievements for the County in recent years. And is it totally
consistent with the desires of the Kohala community as expressed in its Coummunity Development Plan -
"Kohala will be known as a culturally/historically significant community".
3. Keokea Beach is already one of the most popular County Parks in Kohala. On weekends it is too small for
the large crowds that gather there. The Niulii parcel is adjacent to the existing park and would allow for a much
need expansion of Keokea Park and provide for a continuous historical, recreational and scenic coastal park
way to Neue Bay.
4. The four Bays at Neue, Keokea, Kapanaia and Hapuu were used extensively as departure and arrival points
for Kamehameha the Great and his warriors during their 10 -year war (ca 1781-1791) with Keoua. This bays
were significant prep places for the "Blue Trails" that ancient Hawaiians used between coastal areas of Kohala,
Waipio,Hamakua, Laupahoehoe and Hilo.
Please consider the purchase of these three parcels as one of the most significant improvements and investment
for the future of Kohala; Our legacy, our lands, our future.
