Aloha Council Members,
I am Fred Cachola, born and raised in Kohala, a true kamaaina of this historically significanty community of
our county I reside in Hawi, North Kohala. I am offering written testimony in support of Resolution 326-15,
calling for the start of negotiations by the county to purchase the lands of HALELUA, North Kohala for the
following reasons.
1. Halelua is historically significant and directly associated with Kamehameha the Great. These lands are part
of the central area known as Kamehameha's kulaiwi. These are lands that he inherited through his royal
ancestors like his mother Kekuiapoiwa and his other chiefly ancestors of anicient Kohala.
2. Halelua was a central area where he grew up as a child, and where he trained, prepared and
rested/recuperated with his warriors during the 10 -year warfare between he and his cousin Keoua, for the
conquest of the entire island.
3. Halelua is interperted by Kohala kamaaina like Bill Sproat and his son, Kindy as a home (hale-) with a hole
(lua) in its side. This is in reference to that time when the people of Kohala conspired with Chief Naeole to
keep the newly -born infant Kamehameha safe from being kidnapped or killed by Ali'i Nui Alapai. So there were
homes in this area with holes where the infant Kamehameha could be hidden, safe from the searching warriors
of Alapai.
These lands of Halelua are contiguous with two other adjacent ahupa'a which also have direct and significant
associations with Kamehameha the
Great. These lands are cited in Resolutions 327-15 Hapu'u to Kapanaia Corridor and Resolution 328-15, Niulii.
