November 16, 2015 TO' The Hawaii County Council 0 email confirmation sent bach�hatFitp s RE: Written testimony on The Hawaii Island Humane Society (HIHS) and Big Island Dog Rescue (BIDR) 01 - Dear Chairman Pekela and Council Members: As a business owner of Nose for Adventure (NFA), and one who works closely in the dog rescue community, I would like to offer additional testimony about BIDR. We first became acquainted with Tasi Autele at Nose for Adventure, where he introduced himself and his 100% success rate with his efforts in dog rescue. I told him that Nose for Adventure works closely with HIHS and KARES, and often provides temporary boarding and foster services. Thereafter, NFA assisted Tasi and BIDR with free boarding for rescue dogs, until July of 2015. July is a very busy time of year for boarding, so NFA decided to put a freeze on any new dogs (customers, fosters, rescue, etc.) This is also during the same time that BIDR was planning their HIHS protest. I was made aware that Tasi was approaching NFA customers with his rantings about the HIHS. I called Tasi to let him know that it is a busy time of year and that NFA was holding off of taking any new dogs until possibly September/October when we would re-evaluate. He expressed that he was not happy about us not providing him boarding, and I told him it was not only for the rescue dogs but our paying customers as well. Our number one concern are the dogs in our charge! I proceeded to let him know that it was a good opportunity for me to let him know that we are HIHS supporters, and that I did not appreciate him approaching NFA customers about his views. He proceeded to yell at me, and I told him that I did not want to get in the middle of his politics, but he stated that by me saying that we were supporters of the HIHS that we were now involved. I told him that since he has not lived here that long, he should know that the Kona community is very small, and that he should work with the dog rescue community and not against it. He hung up on me! Tasi did call back a couple minutes later to say we got disconnected. He wanted to know my name. I told him, "you know who this is Tasi," and he said "I want to make sure I get it right so when MSNBC calls you for their report, they know who". I finally had to tell him he would no longer be welcome back to NFA. I have been a member of the Kona Community since 2003, and feel that we all have to work together — we're in the same canoe, and if you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem. 1.� Ref., To: I? Over the years, NFA has had several of the HIHS second chance dogs as long term fosters, as their forever homes are found. At this time, we will continue to offer our support only to HIHS and Aloha Ilio Rescue. The love and dedication that we all have for these dogs is what helps us all continue in our efforts. It is not easy work, and I commend those at the HIHS who are doing their best to provide all dogs with the best possible chance!
