My suggestions are:
First we must amend the present contract with HIHS to mandate the following:
1. HIHS Must hold all incoming animals for a mandatory hold time of 3 working
days/72 operational open to the public hours. Of all non -injured animals.
2. Presently, HIHS has determined through their decisions and actions and
proof of such that dogs lives are more important than cats by providing 99.9
percent of their shelter/kennel 'space for the canine species, and maintains 2 dog
parks at their Keaau facility. Also to further their "unhumaneness" to felines is that
dogs have a 24 hour holding while cats do not.
3. Additionally, Kennel area allotted for cats are the following: One small 4 by 6 ft,
isolation room and two 7 by 7 ft adoption holding kennel space. There is no
comfortable space within the 7ft by 7ft space for a human to relax with a potential
feline adoptee. This alone decreases potential adoptions. HIHS focuses on the
friendliest and most attractive looking felines for possibly adoption. Since they
have extremely limited space for felines, they are automatically euthanized.
Please look at their data sheet, which shows more felines are received then dogs
yet HIHS prefers to kill felines over dogs instead of increasing the kennel space
for them.
4. If people knew that the cat they, brought in had a fair chance to be
adopted by a mandated 3 day hold time, would drastically decrease the
amount of animals being abandoned because people feel guilty taking their
cat to HIHS when it has a 99 percent chance of being euthanized as soon as
the cats paws enters their facility. If we truly want to reduce the number of
abandoned felines, we must educate the public that HIHS has a humane and
fair treatment policy. su I

5. Temporary feline kennel space needs to be immediately constructed to house
more felines at HIHS Keaau. At our own sanctuary (PAWS) we built 10 ft by 30 ft
kennels for under $3,000 each. HIHS says they have no room to expand, but they
can if they utilize one of the grounds of the two dog parks for cat kennels.
6. There is no scientific procedure to determine a feral wild cat from a scared
petrified feline pet. Both will show similar behavior. HIHS automatically determines
with prejudice to euthanize by falsely claiming these felines are un -adoptable. A
Horrible practice of HIHS to deny pet owner the opportunity to reclaim their pets.
Economically and morally it is the right thing to do to mandate our community
humane society - HIHS which receives nearly $2,000,000 million of our county tax
monies to treat felines and canines equally with same amount of kennel space
and same amount of a 3 day hold time.
