Aloha,
I respectfully submit this video testimony to the Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit, meeting at 1:30
pm in Kailua-Kona on 11/17/15.
I am submitting this testimony under agenda item Comm. 561, a discussion on the Hawaii Island Humane
Society - euthanasia and adoptability rates.
I have been a volunteer shelter photographer at HIHS Waimea since September, 2014. My video is 2:23
minutes in length and showcases photographs of a selection of the pets on adoption row in Waimea over the
course of 2015. Many of these pets were adopted out to rescue groups or individuals, and a few are currently
available for adoption. Sadly, it is likely that some unknown (to me) number of these adoptable animals were
euthanized. It breaks my heart to imagine any of these beautiful dogs and cats meeting that fate. I know that the
shelter staff members find euthanasia heartbreaking as well.
I urge you, the County Council, to do whatever you can to support and implement policy that allows the HIHS,
working together with other animal rescue organizations, to act as a true safety net for our Big Island rescue
animals.
