REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> AND MASS TRANSIT <br /> DATE: January 5, 2016 Re: Comm.No. 608 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 9:02 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit,to which was referred Comm.No.608,reports as follows: <br /> Communication 608, transmitted by Mayor William P.Kenoi, dated December 15, 2015, requests review and <br /> favorable recommendation of the nomination of Mr. Michael L. Akau to the Hawai`i County Transportation <br /> Commission. Mr. Akau is a 26-year resident of Hawaii. He was formerly a heavy equipment operator with <br /> Isemoto Contracting and is presently a Business Representative with Local 3 Operating Engineers. Mr. Akau <br /> has coached paddling at Parker School, volunteered with Keiki Motocross and he is an AAU T-ball coach. He <br /> states that he is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed, Mr. Akau will serve a full term to expire <br /> on December 31, 2020. Mr. Akau replaces Mr.Neal Herbert,whose term expired on December 31, 2015. <br /> A motion to approve the nomination was made by Ms. Poindexter and seconded by Mr. Kanuha. Executive <br /> Assistant to Mayor Kenai, Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, introduced and provided background information on <br /> Nominee Akau, expressed the Mayor's support, and requested Council's favorable action of this appointment. <br /> During discussion, Your Committee expressed confident support and gratitude for Mr. Akau`s interest in <br /> serving on the Transportation Commission. When given the opportunity to speak,Mr.Akau briefly shared his <br /> background in regards to his experience travelling around the island; reasons of interest and participation as a <br /> commissioner and that he looks forward to serving the people of Hawaii within his capacity as a <br /> commissioner. Mr. Akau was informed by Your staff that he is not required to be present at final confirmation <br /> before the full Council. <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication <br /> No. 608, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Mr. Michael L.
