Hawaii County Council Members:
Please let me begin by thanking you for considering this important Bill 140,that amends chapter 20 of Hawaii County
Code 1983 by adding an imperative new article to reduce Styrofoam food containers and food service ware sold by food
providers and vendors to customers.
Most of us already have an idea of how harmful Styrofoam(made of polystyrene)can be to the ocean,beaches and land we
are honored to live on here on Hawaii Island.But did you know that it is the main component of marine debris?It is also
harmful to the wildlife that ingests it,including endangered species.

Polystyrene also takes up more space in landfills than paper and is non-biodegradable,and can take anywhere from
several decades to hundreds of years to deteriorate in our landfills or environment.We just don't have the space or time to
wait for this to happen on our island.
Polystyrene also contains toxic substances styrene and benzene,that are suspected carcinogens and neurotoxins that are
hazardous to humans.
Over 10o U.S.and Canadian,as well as European and Asian cities,have already banned polystyrene(Styrofoam)food
packaging as a result of the negative impacts to humans and the environment.Don't you want the same for our residents
and aina?There are other healthier packaging options that can replace this harmful one.
Please vote in favor of Bill 140,that amends chapter 20 of Hawaii CountyCode 1983 by adding an imperative new article
