Subject: In Support for County Bill 140
Aloha,
If there is one thing the earth is in abundance of, it is light. Without light, we cannot survive - it is a trade off
This single entity gives of itself freely. The world is also in abundance of people. Without one another, we
cannot survive - it is an exchange. We can and have the potential to give of ourselves freely. These things are
challenges that are difficult to control entirely, but there is one thing we can control with simple steps - non-
biodegradable materials.
The half life of styrofoam is discussed to be over thousands of years, essentially FOREVER. Why? How? The
entity that gives us life - LIGHT - cannot breakdown styrofoam material. It resists photolysis. It is considered
the main component of marine debris.
Hawaii has a very diverse and unique marine life due to its location and distance from varying
environments. Animals come here to evolve. When studying the marine life in Hawaii in comparison to its
counterparts in other environments, you find differences between the SAME species found elsewhere. But
when the land is riddled with unnatural materials, we cannot see the beauty that the light, environment, and time
has to offer.
In addition to marine pollution, we must take into account the air pollution. Styrofoam is harmful for the
environment. And in a time where sustainability is a necessity, we must be aware of our surroundings. Water,
air, and earth surround us. We must be conscious of this. We must be conscious of how polystyrene foam is
made. Do the research.
We have an obligation to the earth, to each other. It IS our kuleana. Love the 'aina. Show that you care. You
would be a fool to let your love squander.
Just one step -ban the use of styrofoam and let us start here, in the islands.
