I am writing in support of the polystyrene ban, Bill#140. I have owned a coffee shop in Hawi since 1997.
I have been using compostable to-go ware for the last 8 years since they became available on the island.
The impact of polystyrene on the environment is terrible. It is not recyclable and does not break down.
The cost may be considerably less than the more ecological alternatives, however, the cost to the
environment,our oceans and our bodies is way higher in the long run. My customers are happy to pay a
little bit more as they know they are not causing risk to themselves or to the environment. It has had a
very positive impact on my business.The times are changing. More information is becoming available
regarding the negative effects of eating and drinking out of Styrofoam all the time. Different cities
around the globe are waking up to the negative impacts of polystyrene and are banning the sale and use
of it. I plead with you to take a big step and pass this ban ASAP.
