Subject: Support Bill 140 for our Children
Aloha Council,
I am a school garden teacher in Kona at Kealakehe Elementary School. I have dedicated my time on the island
to teaching the next generation the importance of sustainability and self-sufficiency. In our classroom, we
define sustainability as the ability to keep going without any problems. If we "keep going" at our rate of
consumption, especially in the use of non-recyclables and toxic products, we will inevitably run in to problems.
As one of my forth grade students said, "styrofoam is the worst, if you burn it, it releases toxic chemicals into
our air!"
For our island to sustain itself and "keep going without problems",we must address the issues stopping us from
sustainability. Styrofoam is one of those. Banning use as food containers is such a simple and easy way to
reduce the amount of waste on our island home. The resources of land and water can be sustainable, but without
proper care and consideration they are undoubtably finite.
I leave to you the personal responsibility-the ability to respond-to the issues hindering our sustainability of the
island. Support Bill 140 and make a difference today for those of us here on the island and for the future
generations to come.
