Sako, via Comm. No. 838 dated April I, 2016, authorizes the Department of Public Works to award funds to Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii (PATH). The grant in the amount of $47,164.63 would be used by PATH to administer the County's Safe Routes to School program. Specific projects currently include the Montessori and Kahakai Schools in North Kona, Keaukaha School, and Honoka'a School. Several Council Members commented separately regarding a brief history of the program, grant writing for more funds, and integration of trails and paths to schools to be included into the Mass Transit plan.
