Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 869, reports as follows:
Communication No. 869,transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi dated April 7, 2016, nominates
Nancy Carr Smith to the Leeward Planning Commission. If confirmed, Ms. Carr Smith would serve a
term to expire March 31, 2021.
Charmaine Shigemura, Executive Assistant for Mayor Kenoi, introduced Ms. Can Smith.
Ms. Can Smith said she is looking forward to serving and referenced her previous service on the
South Kohala Community Development Plan Action Committee and the Board of Appeals. Mr. Paleka
asked Ms. Can Smith to elaborate on her work with the Ulumau/Hawai`i Island Leadership Series.
Ms. Carr Smith responded that the purpose was to bring up new leaders in the community.
Ms. Poindexter thanked Ms. Carr Smith for volunteering and giving of her time for the Waimea
community, and for stepping up to serve. Mr. Kanuha said he know Ms. Can Smith will do a great job
and that he knows she will balance all interests fairly.
Ms. Carr Smith was informed that she is not required to be present for Council confirmation.
Your Committee on Planning is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 869, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Nancy Can Smith to the Leeward Planning
Commission.
