I applaud Ms Willie for introducing this bill.
Many say the cost of biodegradable containers is cost prohibitive and will impact the price of meals;beverages
and food to consumers. I present another perspective.
It is true that styrofoam is a thrifty way for merchants to provide food to consumers. It is a solely economic
issue.
As we reflect on the broader picture consider these points:
1. What cost and impact will saving pennies now have on our great
grandchildrens Island environment and ocean environment?
2. What cost does the use of styrofoam/non biodegradable products have
on the now and our land/ocean environment and landfill?how does the
litter impact tourism?
3. If people can afford to take-out surely they can afford a few pennies for a
container that is biodegradable.
4. How do the merchants that have already incorporated biodegradables
into their operations manage?
I would like to recommend that there be a general Island ban on all styrofoam cups,plates and food containers.
There really is no reason for them. Past generations had luaus and gatherings without them. If this is not
exceptable, levee stiff taxes on the purchase of such items encouraging the consumer to choose biodegradable
alternatives.
Reduce, reuse, recycle!
Lastly send a memo out to all County departments and agencies requesting that they model this positive
behavior by replacing all non biodegradables with alternatives.
