Aloha,
My name is Tammie Carpenter, I am the Public Relations Manager at Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.The
Sheraton Kona is part of 11 Starwood properties throughout the State of Hawaii.Starwood takes a global perspective to
see the larger picture of people,the planet and profit. In 2008,Starwood started a Sustainability Initiative called
"30/20", which calls for a 30 percent reduction in energy use and a 20 percent reduction in water consumption per hotel
globally by 2020. David Richard,the Starwood Regional Director of Sales and Marketing, states that"this initiative was
passed because we know that our guests are choosing brands that reflect their desire to reduce the global footprint to
ensure a successful future."To meet this goal,Starwood has made energy and water reductions utilizing low cost
upgrade such as high efficiency LED lighting, low flow fixtures, as well as capital improvement by installing energy
efficient mechanical systems.
In addition to the above efforts, here in the local community Sheraton Kona has integrated sustainable and social
responsibility practices throughout our entire property.These sustainability practices take place throughout all three of
our restaurants which served over 100,000 covers last year.We've eliminated all Styrofoam products because we know
it's a pivotal step in preserving this beautiful place we call home. Reducing Styrofoam is just one step in our ongoing
journey towards environmental sustainability and is the cornerstone of local prosperity.The financial impact in switching
from Styrofoam to alternative eco-friendly products has been minimal in contrast to the long term benefits of preserving
our'aina. We know that this decision supports a healthy environment and serves the interests of both current and
future generations,which ultimately constitute the foundation for long-lasting success. Please "Hold the Foam"for our
'aina, oceans, keiki, native wildlife, and health of the Big Island.
