Karen Eoff Hawai'i County Council District 8, North Kona 808-323-4280 work 808-938-3580 cell From: Frances Pueo [mailto:owlitl@gmail.com] Sent: Sunday, May 01, 2016 9:12 AM To: Eoff, Karen Subject: support bill 140 Please Support Bill 140 As you are already aware of that Styrofoam is CONSUMED by marine and land animals, causing major HEALTH HAZARDS to animals such as the Hawaiian green sea turtles (which are listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973). Secondary hazard to all sea life is that the LEACHING polystyrene sinks to the ocean bottom, where it will act as a contaminant of not only the ocean surface but the entire sea floor. The argument is that the ban would cause major economic damage to businesses using the toxic products. Nonsense! (Does anyone remember that the sky would fall if we stopped using plastic bags?) It's all about protecting our environment, our oceans, all life forms! Small business like Island Naturals store, Lilikoi Café and many others already use compostable, plant fiber, biodegradable products that is replacing Styrofoam products. The plates, eating utensils are well made and stronger then the plastic and styrofoam type. The University of Hawaii at Manoa has implemented a new policy on sustainable food products that phases out the use of styrofoam on campus. The movement is already taking place, but we need Bill 140 to continue this momentum for the entire island as a wake up to comply to protect our vital biosphere. Hawai'i JFPlJvast natural resources needs your-our protection. Please support Bill 140, C664.47, C664.48. (ALI au Comm No. Ref. 1 Ref. Date MAY 0 3 91198 Respectfully yours Frannie Pueo 769-1128 P.O.
