Subject: Please Support Bill 140 for Hawai'i County = - f
Honorable Council Members,
My name is George Kaimana Yasuda, born and raised on the Big island and I would like to totally support Bill 140 for our
Hawaii County. I am a Private Certified Life Guard and a Life Guard Instructor and have been on the Ocean almost
everyday for the past 12 years, and really notice that our Turtle population is extremely low to non existent around the
areas I frequent in West Hawaii from Kawaihae to Keauhou Bay. I do Turtle rescues too but disturbingly I haven't
needed to do turtle rescues for about 2 years now because there are extremely limited Turtles compared to
before. That is not good news. Factually, everyday I don't see even one turtle compared to 7 years ago,when I would
see at least one everyday. I use to be a UH Researcher in the Biological Science World, so I try to be objective. Although
my observation is not scientically done with scientific research protocol, my daily observations over 12 years of actual In-
the-Ocean presence should be quite accurate compared to actual research done over a shorter period of time. When I
have seen the Wild Dolphins and Turtles, I have witnessed them playing with or nibbling at styrofoam, indicating that
they do ingest it,whether purposefully or accidentally. This is also true of the Wild Dolphins here,just 5 years ago our
Superpod population was over 1900, but today there is less than 300 Dolphins in the same area.
Please Ban Styrofoam as Bill 140 proposes because Styrofoam is a real problem,for the sake of the Marine Life, Our
Earth, our Kids,our Future!!!
