Aloha Council Member Onishi,
I write to express my opposition to Bill 165 which would add a County
of Hawaii surcharge of one-half percent on top of the current 4.0
General Excise Tax.

I am writing in opposition to an increase in the County share of the `-LL
G.E.T. This tax is hurts our families and businesses directly by
taking hard earned money that is needed to care for our ohana away. from
us. It not only reduces the amount of income we receive, especially sy
for those of us that work on commission income, but it makes the goods
we buy more expensive. It is a tax on a tax on a tax on everything a--
from medicine to food to home care products. It is one of the main
reasons that our poorer citizens are stuck in an economic rut that just
gets deeper and deeper.
Please have the courage to stand up for the needs of your citizens.
Stop the increase in the most regressive tax you can levy on your
friends and families. It is not right to pay for the costs of
excessive Government expenses on the backs of the people who elect you.
Find another way, please.
Just because you can raise the G.E.T. does not mean you should. Please
say no.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my thoughts on this important
matter in advance of Tuesday's vote.
