Aloha Council Member Onishi,
I write to express my opposition to Bill 165 which would add a County
of Hawaii surcharge of one-half percent on top of the current 4.0 %r. CD477)
General Excise Tax.
While I recognize and appreciate the need to raise additional revenues ,` .for the County of Hawaii, I believe this is a regressive tax which will N.) •
disproportionately affect those who can least afford it. The tax is
passed along at the point of sale/purchase and will be felt most by the
homeless, those with children and those struggling to pay the rent or '=• 'n
mortgage on their homes. I would instead suggest a higher transient
accommodations tax, which can be passed along to those coming to visit J
our island home and can most afford to pay for the pleasant Ln
surroundings provided to them by our hard working friends and
neighbors.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my thoughts on this important
matter in advance of Tuesday's vote.
