President-Elect Hilo,Hawai`i 96720 NJ — Michael Kaleikini Vice President Dear Chair Eoff and Council Members: William Walter Treasurer RE: Statement in Opposition to Bill 165 Nathan Colgrove Immediate Past The Hawai`i Island Chamber of Commerce(HICC) appreciates this opportunity President Chuck Erskine to provide testimony regarding Bill 165. HICC, which comprises over 300 member businesses, organizations and professionals represents the voice of Directors business on Hawai`i Island. Lincoln Ashida ' HICC is opposed to Bill 165. HICC's position is that establishing a one-half David Bock percent general excise and use tax surcharge increase is an unacceptable Russell Chin financial burden to our businesses and community at large. Had the GE tax Newton Chu been a"simple sales"tax, HICC would view it more as a choice for the John Cross consumer and therefor give it further consideration. As an alternative, HICC Jackie De Luz would consider supporting an increase of the fuel tax and would support Watanabe County initiatives to increase the Counties share of the Transient Jason Fujimoto Accommodation Tax.
