Heart Ranch is a 501©3 non-profit program that serves Hawaii County Youth ages 8-18 and their families. Our mission is to Build Confidence, Develop Leadership and Encourage Personal Growth in children and families. We do this by mentoring youth with a session leader in a one to one ratio on the ranch. Horses and other ranch animals are utilized in this mentorship. The program is free and serves children from all kinds of home situations. Many of our kids come from foster system, incarcerated parent(s),deceased parent(s),Asperger's and Autism, bullied, and bulliers, broken homes, and kids with various struggles referred by therapists and agencies such as,QLCC(Queen Liliuokalani Children Center), Hawaii Behavior Health, Bayada,Tiffe, and others.Although underprivileged youth are the target group,we do not require any specific criteria in order to participate. We believe all youth need and benefit greatly from love and encouragement. Horses often mirror behavior and give us honest feedback. By teaching observation of their behavior kids learn how to modify their own behavior. For instance,if a kid runs up to a horse, the horse shows fear or discomfort. The kids naturally care about animals being comfortable with them and it is an incredible teaching moment. Working with 1000 lb.animal you have to set clear boundaries. This is where confidence and leadership are really developed. Financial support comes from donors and fundraising. The grant would be used to assist in supporting the ongoing operational costs. Our biggest budgetary item is feed for animals, feeding 12 horses currently. Veterinarian and farrier care,as well as the youth volunteer program;which is an opportunity for past participants to focus on servant leadership are additional program expenses. All staff and the board members are unpaid volunteers. Thank-you again for your consideration, and please browse our website or call for an appointment to visit the ranch in person,if you are interested in learning more.
