to the provision of services for our island's communities.

The funding recommended for The Salvation Army-Family Intervention Services'Substance Abuse
Prevention Program will contribute significantly to our ability to provide a safe and nurturing
environment along with access to opportunities,experiences and services to support the
prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among youth ages 7—17 in the Pahoa
communities. The program implements an evidence-based curriculum to educate youth on the
risks of underage drinking and other drug use at various schools in Pahoa. In addition to the
c curriculum,the program provides a number of community based activities which include
community service projects,family activities,and cultural awareness programs during after school
hours, intercessions and weekends.
In addition,our program builds and develops various collaborations to further decrease the
availability of alcohol and other drugs for youth in the Pahoa community and county funds will
support our overall operating costs to provide and sustain services in this area.
