Re: Opposition of Bill 212
To whom it may concern:
My name is Crystal Williams and I'm a Loan Officer at Hawaii Community Federal Credit
Union in North Kohala. I'm writing in regarding to the proposed Bill No. 212 which is seeking
to remove credit union tax exemption for the County of Hawaii. I am opposed to the passing
of Bill No. 212.
"People helping people" is the philosophy of credit unions. We at Hawaii Community
Federal Credit Union have done numerous acts to prove we stand by our philosophy. Here
are a few of the many ways we have helped our community:
Starting will some of our youngest members, during the school year we go to the
elementary school twice a month for deposit days. Elementary student are encouraged to
make deposits into their accounts and receive a small prize. The bigger prize is that they are
learning a life time skill of saving.
Another program we have is geared for the young adults. We have Student Credit Unions
located at High Schools which is ran by student tellers during the school year. High School
students as well as faculty have the ability to deposit, withdrawal, and cash checks. This
program is aimed to teach young adults what is required to be financially independent. The
Student Credit Union is a replica of an actual Credit Union, standing by the same philosophy
of"People helping people". Student Credit Union Board Members and Members have done
numerous service projects such as window washing for our local senior citizens, can food
drives for our local churches, and beach clean ups, just to name a few.We also offer a
financial literacy program during their winter break which teaches the young adults the
importance of saving and budgeting and how to do so.
These programs are to help the children, our future generation, achieve financial awareness
so when they become adults they are able to budget for their everyday expenses as well as
enjoy their monies earned.
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union is known for generous donations to local charities.
We hold annual Market Days where each branch sells donated produce, baked goods, and
merchandise to help raise funds for designated charities. Every dollar earned from Market
day goes directly to them.We are also a big supporter of the Children's Miracle Network
and Hawaii United Way.

These are just to list a few of the many ways our saved dollars go back to the community. If
Bill No. 212 is passed, it will not only have a negative impact on the Credit Union community
but it will also impact our members directly.Credit Unions will lose their identity. We will
need to increase profits to support the additional tax burden. Credit Unions will be forced
to decrease the returns on savings and deposits and increase interest rates on loans. Credit
Unions are able to help the people that banks would just turn away from.Wither it's helping
them start building their credit, purchasing an auto, buying their first home, Credit Unions
want to help the people. Please let us continue to help the people of Hawaii and consider
keeping Credit Unions exempt from Real Property Taxes.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
