I am the former beach cleanup coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation and I currently volunteer with 808Cleanups and have 3 sites that I steward regularly.During my time organizing cleanups for Surfrider I was able to see first hand what the throw-away plate lunch culture has done to our islands.EPS foam(commonly called styrofoam)containers are the most toxic form of plastic made, and if you walk any shoreline on any beach here you'll find it littered with bits of this foam, while containers floating in the surf-you name it.It is a problem we have control of, but have thus far chosen to do nothing about. "Big plastic"has a hold on our islands, encouraging locals that don't know better to think that switching to alternative forms of to go containers will"ruin"their business and cost too much.I beg to differ. We cannot afford another 100 years of our consumer culture. We've got to Rise Above Plastics and claim our islands as truly sacred and protect them from this constant onslaught of pollution. They say"don't take away my plate lunch" ...I say-Don't poison mine to save a few pennies and destroy our islands in the process. Please vote yes.
