Subject: Please vote to ban Styrofoam
Aloha Council Member Kanuha,
I hope you're doing well! Do you have plans to see Jenna(Fear) Lee while she's in town? Baby Noah's getting
big already!
I just wanted to write a quick note to share my support for Bill 140 banning Styrofoam in our Hawaii Island
restaurants. I have been disturbed by the amount of the product used on this island since I moved here in 2010. I
also recently had a cousin visit from Paris, where the plastic is banned, and she was shocked that an island with
such apparent desire to care for the environment(i.e. through the plastic ban law), would still allow the use of
Styrofoam in restaurants.
I understand the concern regarding the (minimal) added financial burden to small business but as a community,
we are innovative and adaptable. If we truly care about our island environment and abundant marine life, and
hope to keep it pure for years to come, we must make laws in line with our values.
What is good for business cannot be good for our community if it infects, and ultimately harms, our
environment, the fishing culture, and the people of this community. We in Hawaii can be a model for the Pacific
region, the United States, and the global community, as innovative leaders who can find alternatives to
Styrofoam, and take action against one of many toxic byproducts of human activity.
I urge you to consider voting for the bill this Friday, June 3rd, for the island, the people, the animals, and our
future generations.
Aloha and thank you for your consideration,
Anais Gude ^
